Pennys From Heaven

I read Dear Abby, an advice column in the Cedar Rapids Gazette almost daily. People often send in letters about how they found Pennies from Heaven. A penny from Heaven means that you find a penny on the ground with a significant date to it that reminds you of a person that has passed on. The date could be the year they were born or when you met them, really anything. The writers of these letters often say that finding that penny feels like a sign from the person that has died. Maybe it’s the dead person’s way of telling you that they are okay and you don’t need to worry about them.

Recently I got my first experience on finding a penny from heaven. When I was walking to my car last Monday, September 19, I came across a penny in the Kennedy parking lot. Naturally I grabbed the penny and looked at the date. The date on the penny was 1964, which happens to be the year that my mom was born which I thought was cool. When I got home I told my mom about the penny. She thought it was strange that I would find a penny from her birth year on what would have been my grandpa’s 86th birthday. My grandpa died just this past August.

My grandpa always had the ability to find four leaf clovers and my family thinks I have inherited that ability but instead of four leaf clovers I find money. We thought that maybe my grandpa put that penny on the ground for me to find because I would be the most likely to spot it.

Was it a sign from my grandpa? Maybe he is trying to tell us that he and grandma (who died last October) are ok. For now though it will be one of my lucky pennies.
