It’s the start of a new tradition. After many years of sleeping in my bed while everyone else is out shopping on Black Friday, I finally got to experience it myself for the first time ever.
I have always wanted to experience Black Friday mainly because of what I see in the news. You hear the reports of a crazy person sitting in line for two days before a sale starts or someone dying because they got trampled. I wanted to see this craziness for my own eyes. My mother never wanted to go because she didn’t want to get up early and thought it was a waste of time. This year though, I said I was going no matter what, even if I have to drive myself there, which could be a problem considering we would be in Dubuque and I don’t really know my way around. I convinced my sisters to go with me and got directions to the stores even though my parents doubted we would go.
My sisters and I wanted to experience the full effect of Black Friday shopping and in order to do this you have to wait in line. We kind of cheated a little on this because we only stood in line outside for ten minutes but it still counts. We stood outside Target in a line that stretched practically all the way around the store. When the store finally opened the doors at midnight the employees would only let thirty people in every thirty seconds. This stopped people from running into the store like maniacs which is what I wanted to experience. Once entering our first store we didn’t really have a plan on what we were shopping for, we were mainly looking around and taking it all in. After finding some stuff we were going to buy we had to stand in line to check out. This was the only down part in the whole experience. The checkout line stretched from the back of the store, weaving in and out of the aisles. We probably stood in that line alone for at least an hour or more.
After we finally left Target we went to our next store which was Kohl’s. Since the store also opened at midnight we didn’t have to stand outside. Just like Target though we had to stand in line to check out but this time it went a lot quicker, probably only forty five minutes. Fortunately those two stores were the only ones that we had to endure long lines.
After going to a couple of other stores we finally called it quits for the day and came home at five in the morning. We were exhausted, mainly because we had to get up early on Thanksgiving Day and run seven miles in the Dubuque Turkey Trot. Plus you have to factor in all the delicious food we ate that day. Over all though, I enjoyed this experience and will definitely do it again in the years to come.
