Looking Back on 2011 (part 4)

Vacation to PA: Summer vacation to Pennsylvania is one vacation that I will never forget. We drove all the way to a Johnston, PA and stayed the night and then headed towards Gettysburg. Driving to our destination we had to drive up hilly mountains and our van decides that it will not do it; we were not gaining enough speed to be on the interstate. We stopped at a car place to see what was wrong with our van and we almost had to buy a new one because the transmitter was going. We spend the whole day there and stayed overnight in the town. The next day the van was working enough that we were able to drive back but only on flat ground. On our way back to Iowa we stopped in Ohio and enjoyed a couple of days at the amusement park and the beach. Then we took off again back to Iowa praying that our van wouldn’t breakdown.  On our way back home we took a detour through Indiana to avoid being stuck in Chicago traffic and our van breaking down in it. Our detour ended up taking a little longer than we thought but we were able to see all the small towns in Indiana. Then we hit a nasty storm (the day that Dubuque got all the rain). We had to stop at a rest stop to see if there were any tornado warnings out because the sky was really dark. We were in the rest stop for about an hour and a half loosing electricity twice. Finally around 2 in the morning we arrived in Cedar Rapids (we were originally supposed to arrive at about 8 at night).  We eventually had to get a new van.

Becoming a Junior: Starting my junior year in high school gave me all the upper classmen opportunities that I stated above but also made me realize how close to graduating from high school I am. I still consider myself as a sophomore and when people ask me my grade the I have to think “wait what grade I am in again”. I also can’t help but think that “wow I am almost a senior and then I am almost going to college”. It seems just like yesterday that I was entering in as a freshman in high school.

Saying goodbye: the saddest thing that happened this year was that my grandfather passed away. He had to have heart surgery because he was having trouble doing work around the farm. He knew that there was a risk in taking the surgery at his age but he really couldn’t do anything else.  The surgery didn’t come out as we hoped it would and he passed away. I miss him and its different without him being there on my mom’s side of the family but I know he is in a better place with my grandma.
